My thoughts?

Personally, I think that we’re designed by God, and I’m not here by chance. However, growing up in a Christian home and attending a school where the teachers a Christian, I may be slightly bias.

I believe that I’m here for a reason, but I’m still trying to find that out and learn more about myself. Life is a journey, and there’s a lot of things that are unknown and may stay that way for a while. Maybe one day I’ll get an epiphany and just realize my purpose, but I think that’s an eventual process. Because of this, I tend to try a lot of different things, to discover more about my likes and dislikes and what fits me.

During this research, I’ve noticed that there are people who believe something just because that’s what others do, or because they are against one part of something and therefore against all of it. I think that before you choose to believe in anything, you should look into it for yourself. Don’t let other people or things stop you from learning, and have a growth mindset.

The whole creationism vs evolution thing is something I don’t think will ever be resolved. We can do a lot of research, find lots of evidence, and discover new information, but it will never be enough. Although personally I’m satisfied with what I know, because I don’t really care that much about this, for those that do care, I think they can always go farther and dive deeper. Maybe you’ll end up getting more questions than answers, but that’s part of the learning process. It never ends, and there’s always more.

After doing all this research, and hearing other’s opinions, I’m not entirely sure where I am. I believe there is a God, who designed everything, but beyond that things are more fuzzy than before, when the choices were a lot less. My perspective is different, knowing more than before, but my thinking has mostly stayed the same.

Creation Evidence: DNA

DNA is often used as a basis for evidence of evolution, but can DNA also point to the existence of an intelligent creator or a god? After all, if DNA forms the basis of life, where did it come from in the first place?

The probability that DNA was created by chance is very slim. Also, how does it work anyways? It’s an instruction manual of sorts, carrying coding and information that allows a living thing to work. But at the same time, it’s just made of regular chemicals. How does sugar and phosphate somehow go beyond and create something so complicated? Not only is what it creates complicated, but it’s also very specific. DNA contains info that allows proteins to form using amino acids put together in the right order. There’s so many different possibilities when it comes to them; the chances that they could just come together perfectly by random happenings is miniscule.

DNA itself is basically evidence of an intelligent creator or designer. Luck can sometimes get someone decently far, but without skill to back it up, it will eventually fizzle away and end. This may not seem like applicable here, but I think that it’s what this whole argument boils down to.

Creation evidence: Irreducible Complexity

One of the main pieces of evidence for creationism is irreducible complexity, where a system is made of multiple parts, each of which are important and without them the whole system will stop working. Is it really possible for evolution, a process where everything happens by chance, to create something like this?

The argument is this: Because evolution is a a process that gradually changed organisms little by little to better their chances of survival, it can’t produce such a complex structure in a short time. It can slowly modify them, but they need to come from somewhere first.

A simple example is a mousetrap. It has 5 main parts that each have an important function the trap can’t do without.

The mousetrap

Without a spring, the hammer will just flop around; Without a catch, nothing will trigger the contraption. Because of this, the system will be useless until its building process is completed.

In evolution, something like this wouldn’t be possible. Not only can’t a complex system just suddenly come into being, but because of the nature of evolution, useless small parts can’t be added bit by bit. This can only be explained with that there’s a higher power somewhere that designed it.

Creation

Creationism is the belief that the universe and life was created specifically by a god or deity. Intelligent design is a form of creationism, which is where there’s an intelligent designer behind everything.

Examples of evidence for creationism include irreducible complexity, and DNA.

Evolution evidence: Natural Selection

Unlike some other pieces of evidence, natural selection focusses more on how species evolve. Because of smaller-scale examples in the world, we can already see that this is a proven thing. Examples include various types of insects, such as the peppered moths, birds, and other animals. And if it can happen on a small scale, then it probably may also apply to the world on a much larger scale over a time span of billions of years.

Peppered moths: an example of natural selection

Basically how natural selection works is:
1. There is a variation within a species. This could be something like a slight colour change to something more physiological.
2. The better ones survive, the others die off.
3. The better ones then go and reproduce, giving their offspring their traits.
4. Eventually, all the lesser ones will die out, and the whole population will consist of the ones with the more beneficial trait.

In simple terms, it could be described as “survival of the fittest”. Better ones survive and make more, others die. Through this process, living things slowly evolve to become better and more suitable for their environments.

Evolution

Naturalistic evolutionists believe in natural selection and that living things all have a similar origin from which they evolved. Everything happened because of natural forces, without God or another deity driving it. There are also other types of evolutionists, such as theistic or diest, who believe that a god set the evolutionary process into motion.

Evolution has multiple pieces of evidence to support it. Some examples are fossils, genetics, and natural selection. For more information, click the links below:

Evolution evidence: Fossil Record & Genetics

Fossils have been found that show slight changes in species over time that lead up to an animal in the present. A good example of this is the current day whale.

The picture above shows how whales may have come from Pakicetus from around 49 million years ago. Over time they have evolved to become better suited in the water, with adaptations allowing for hearing underwater and easier and faster swimming. But fossils are hard to find, and although they have similarities suggesting evolution, they don’t prove that one species came from another. However, another piece of evidence for common ancestry is genetics.

The multiple similarities between human’s genes and other animal’s, especially a chimpanzee’s, if a commonly known fact. But could this mean that we may have a common ancestor, or may even come from them? Studies suggest that yes, we may have the same family tree, and have evolved from apes. DNA is an essential part that makes up who we are, and even the smallest bit changed can create big differences. But with a bunch of small changes happening over time, eventually the end result will be much different from the starting product.
