Evolution evidence: Natural Selection

Unlike some other pieces of evidence, natural selection focusses more on how species evolve. Because of smaller-scale examples in the world, we can already see that this is a proven thing. Examples include various types of insects, such as the peppered moths, birds, and other animals. And if it can happen on a small scale, then it probably may also apply to the world on a much larger scale over a time span of billions of years.

Peppered moths: an example of natural selection

Basically how natural selection works is:
1. There is a variation within a species. This could be something like a slight colour change to something more physiological.
2. The better ones survive, the others die off.
3. The better ones then go and reproduce, giving their offspring their traits.
4. Eventually, all the lesser ones will die out, and the whole population will consist of the ones with the more beneficial trait.

In simple terms, it could be described as “survival of the fittest”. Better ones survive and make more, others die. Through this process, living things slowly evolve to become better and more suitable for their environments.
